Signed an agreement with the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism for the project on researching and managing the blooming of microorganisms in Jablaničko and Modračko Lakes

At the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism on September 16, an agreement was signed for the project “Improvement of Water Quality through Research and Measures for Managing Microorganism Blooms in the Jablaničko and Modračko Reservoirs”, which we will implement together with respected experts and professors from the University of Tuzla, the University of Mostar, and the “Džemal Bijedić” University of Mostar. The project has been approved for funding through the Public Call of the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism for the implementation of activities from the Action Plan of the Federal Environmental Protection Strategy.

🔹 Why is the project important?
The phenomenon of microorganism blooms—particularly cyanobacteria and algae—has become increasingly pronounced in lakes and reservoirs throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina in recent years. These occurrences directly affect water quality, fish stocks, recreational and tourism activities, and the health of local communities due to potential toxin production as well as unpleasant odors or taste in water. Our project aims to scientifically determine the causes, consequences, and potential protective measures in order to help preserve and restore these vital water resources.

🔹 What will we do?
Analyze the causes of microorganism blooms – researching factors contributing to eutrophication and water degradation.
Propose and develop management measures – from preventive activities to concrete interventions to improve water quality.
Work on preserving biodiversity and water quality at pilot sites – Jablaničko Lake and Lake Modrac serve as examples for testing and developing best practices.
Strengthen cooperation between science, institutions, and local communities – connecting knowledge and practice to ensure that proposed measures are effective and sustainable.
Raise public awareness about the importance of water protection – through education, workshops, and campaigns, helping local communities understand risks and preventive measures.

🔹 Our shared goal
Protecting Jablaničko Lake and Lake Modrac means safeguarding nature, improving the quality of life of local residents, and creating the foundation for sustainable tourism and local development. The project aims to build partnerships between all key actors—from universities and researchers to public institutions and citizens—in order to ensure the long-term protection of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s water resources.
