The Embassy of Sweden is pleased to continue the successful cooperation with the Resource Environmental Center (REC) by signing an agreement in connection with the two-year NEST “Fostering environmental protection through more effective civil society participation in environmental governance and combating environmental crimes” project.
The project, planned to be implemented in the period 2021-2023, aims to strengthen civil society organizations that are actively involved in environmental protection and to provide technical assistance to relevant environmental institutions in implementing EU directives and key reforms in the country in the field of environmental protection.
Specifically, the project will provide support in capacity building of civil society organizations that have the potential to take a leading role in key environmental challenges related to the monitoring and implementation of environmental permit policies, environmental impact assessments (EIA) and strategic environmental assessments (SEA) – as required by EU guidelines – at all levels of administration.
Technical and expert support will be provided to both Entity Ministries of Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations in order to assist them to improve the legal framework by developing and adopting new laws, bylaws and regulations. This will result in an increased percentage of adopted national laws and regulations. This project will enable establishing active cooperation with domestic and international judicial institutions and organizations in connection with the development and implementation of EU legislation in the prevention of environmental crime.
On behalf of the Embassy of Sweden, the Agreement was signed by Mr. Torgny Svenungsson, Director of the International Development Cooperation, and on behalf of the Resource Environmental Center (REC) Ms. Lejla Šuman, Director.
